What is Outbound Training?

Outbound training programs are a new age, experiential learning technique designed to help your employees learn and grow with their peers. Outbound trainings are often portrayed as an uber expensive thing that only large-scale organisations can afford. However, the thing that should be noted is that it is not the amount that is spent that matters, rather it is the experiences that count.

The cost effective, activities list below is meant not just for ‘fun’, rather it is to help build on innumerable qualities. Some of them are highlighted in the figure below:

Activity 1: Setting up a tent:

The name of the game pretty much explains it all. The game becomes even more exciting when it’s played as team challenge and incentives are provided for the first team that finishes their work.
this game encourages people to work together, communicate effectively. Anybody who has prior experience with pitching a tent can become a clear leader of the group.

Activity 2: Tower Building      

This game is very simple and has a straight forward objective. Each team is provided a fixed quantity of office supplies like paper cups, cards, sticks etc. and whichever team is able to build the tallest tower in the given amount of time is the winner.

The key to winning this game is problem solving ability and resource management.

Activity 3: Pipes and Marbles

This game is an interesting challenge. In it, employees are separated into teams of 4 to 6 people. All of them are provided short sections of hollow pipes and some marbles. The objective is to take the marbles from point A to point B into the box/container at the finish line.

The team members have to plan, coordinate and communicate with each other well enough to transport these marbles.

The team members are not allowed to use their hands at all. Instead, they must only use the PVC pipes which are provided to them as a means to transport the marbles.

Activity 4: Painting

Painting isn’t usually perceived as a team activity, but here it can help you get your creative juices flowing and work as a great stress buster. All you need some sets of acrylic or poster colours and medium sized canvasses. The paintings, done in an abstract manner can help people think out of the box.

Activity 5: Scavenger Hunt

This is a pretty simple outdoor activity where people are divided into multiple teams and they compete against each other in completing a set of activities in a given time frame.

For instance, one task could be taking a picture with a sign, finding an object in a specific colour, completing some other objectives. These game help in developing a good competitive spirit within the different teams.

Activity 6: Perfect Square

Each team member is given a piece of rope in their hands, forming a circle. Initially, the ropes are on the floor and when ready, they are asked to step a few paces back from where they were.

Members are then asked to come forward and create a perfect square with the rope pieces. All of this is done while members blindfolded.

Activity 7: Mine Field

This game is played in pairs. Each pair has one person as a guide and one person blindfolded. The guide has to lead the blindfolded partner through a difficult route without stepping on the ‘landmines’. The ‘landmines’ are nothing but objects like bottles, papers, cans spread out in a random fashion to create obstructions in the path.

Activity 8: Egg Drop

Each team is asked to create a contraption with the provided supplies which will prevent an egg falling from a height, breaking. There is a certain time limit within which they have make their setup ready. This activity will help foster creative problem solving and lateral thinking.

Activity 9: Pictionary

This is a simple, and widely played corporate game. One member from the team has to come forward to draw an object or a phrase on a white board and rest of the team has to guess it based on the drawing itself. A great way to stimulate creativity and communication.

Activity 10: Three islands                                                                                     

Players are told to imagine themselves to be stranded on three different islands as teams and they have to ensure their survival (until they are rescued) with limited supplies of some ‘essentials’ given to them. Cooperation and coordination are the keys to winning this game.
